A Ministry of Heath investigation into services provided by Southern District Health Board’s BreastScreen HealthCare, the provider in the Otago and Southland regions, has found there has not been a failure of screening.

The Chief Medical Officer, Dr Don Mackie says the Ministry, Southern District Health Board, and the National Screening Unit have worked collaboratively in the investigation.

“The BreastScreen Aotearoa programme has in place a number of systems and processes to ensure a safe, high quality service is provided.

“We took the concerns, raised in an internal ad-hoc review , very seriously and undertook a cautious and thorough assessment of the facts, so that women can continue to have confidence in breast screening.

“As a result of the investigation we believe that women can be confident in the Otago and Southland service, and indeed the programme nationwide.”
