Your Results and what they mean

Your mammogram is closely checked by two radiologists (doctors who specialise in reading x-rays).

Most x-rays will prove to be normal. If the programme has any previous x-rays of your breasts, a comparison will be made to check for any changes.

Your results will then be sent to you. They will also be sent to your own doctor (GP) if you have agreed to this. Results should reach you within two weeks of your visit. If you have not received them in this time, please contact us on 0800 270 200.

When will you receive your results and what do they mean?

The programme will send your results to you within two weeks of having your mammogram.

For most women, the result will be normal and they will be asked to return for their next mammogram in two years (you will be sent a letter to remind you). This means that any changes that develop in the breasts between mammograms have a good chance of being found and treated early. Early treatment usually means a better outcome.

A small number of women will be phoned to come back because something needs further checking.  This service, which is also free, may involve more mammograms, an ultrasound and perhaps the taking of a small sample of breast tissue for examination under a microscope. Most women recalled will not have breast cancer.

The few women who do have breast cancer will be referred to a specialist for treatment. Most women with breast cancer will be advised to have surgery to remove the cancer. Some women will need further treatment such as radiation therapy, hormone treatment, chemotherapy or a combination of these.
