You should have a mammogram every two years if you are aged 45 - 69. But if you notice any breast symptoms (changes that are not normal for you), see your doctor as soon as possible. Do not wait for your mammogram to have this problem checked.
The whole visit should take about thirty minutes.
You stand in front of a special x-ray machine. The person who takes the x-rays (always a woman) places your breasts (one at a time) between two plastic plates. The plates press your breast and make it flat. You will feel pressure on your breast for a few seconds as it is pressed between the plates. It may cause you some discomfort, feeling like squeezing or pinching. But, the flatter your breasts, the better the picture. Most often, two pictures are taken of each breast - one from the side and one from above. The whole thing takes only a few minutes.
Some women find the mammogram uncomfortable and a small number of women find it painful, but it does not harm your breasts. If your mammogram is painful, when you come for your next one please tell the person taking the x-ray so that she can make you as comfortable as possible.
