The Committee members have been appointed primarily to bring a range of skills and experience in health care decision making at all levels.
Professor Ross Lawrenson (Chair)
Professor Ross Lawrenson is currently Head of Waikato Clinical School, University of Auckland and is a Professor of Primary Care at the University of Auckland. He has over 20 years of experience in general practice, public health and senior hospital management both in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. He is a registered specialist in public health and has published more than 70 peer-reviewed papers. Professor Lawrenson practiced as a GP for five years before taking up an administration role with Waikato Health Board and training in public health. He worked as the Medical Officer of Health in the Waikato before returning to the UK. While in the UK Professor Lawrenson worked as a senior lecturer at Charing Cross Hospital and Westminster Medical School (later Imperial School of Medicine) before moving to University of Surrey where he was Dean of Medicine and Head of the Postgraduate Medical School.
Jacqui Akuhata-Brown
Jacqui Akuhata-Brown is the Group Manager, National Screening Unit. She has extensive experience in the health sector, including roles in contract management, health project management and public health management. Her people and management skills, and strategic thinking ability are important assets to NSAC, along with her commitment to ensuring that the services the NSU purchases are value for money, meet the needs of New Zealanders, are accessible and are of a high standard.
Ashley Bloomfield
Dr Ashley Bloomfield is Chief Advisor Public Health at the Ministry of Health, with professional leadership responsibility for non-communicable diseases including national drug policy. He was public health leader at the National Screening Unit between 2002 and 2004. He is the Ministry’s target ‘champion’ for tobacco, and chairs the Interagency Committee on Drugs and the Expert Advisory Committee on Drugs, which advises the Government on classification of substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Norma Campbell
Norma Campbell is a practising midwife and is the Midwifery Advisor for the New Zealand College of Midwives. In her role as Midwifery Advisor, Norma has considerable input into the overview of all aspects of maternity services. Norma has been on a number of committees and advisory groups in relation to screening in pregnancy and the newborn. She is currently the Chair of the National Breastfeeding Advisory Committee.
John Childs
Dr John Childs is the National Clinical Director, Cancer at the Ministry of Health. John has more than 25 years' experience working in clnical oncology. Since 1991 he has been a specialist Radiation Oncologist with the Auckland District Health Board, and has held appointments as Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology and Clinical Leader of Medical Services at Auckland District Health Board. John is an ex officio member of the Cancer Control Council, and is currently the chair of the National Cancer Treatment Working Party. He has also been a Council Member for the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR), a board member of the Faculty of Radiation Oncology, and is currently an examiner in Radiation Oncology for the RANZCR.
Sandra Corbett
Sandra Corbett is a nurse/health promoter. She is currently the Mäori co-ordinator for the Cervical Screening Programme Hawke's Bay, and works closely with hauora, Mäori communities and organisations, and with workplaces developing strategies to reduce barriers to screening and treatment services. Pivotal to this is her focus on supporting culturally appropriate services through workforce capacity initiatives, and ongoing mentoring, training and updates. At present she also represents the Kaimahi screening collective on the National Cervical Screening Advisory Committee, and the NSU's Mäori Advisory Group.
Sacha Dylan
Sacha Dylan is the Strategic Partnership Advisor - Disability for Waitakere City Council, Auckland. He is a consultant in disability matters, accessible communication and strategic knowledge management.
Alec Ekeroma
Dr Alec Ekeroma is an obstetrician/gynaecologist at Middlemore Hospital, Auckland where he is also a Senior Lecturer supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. He is active in Pacific Health where he has led and has been a director of various Pacific regional and national committees and organisations. He has published on a variety of topics and his interest is in health services research and Pacific women’s health. Dr Ekeroma has initiated innovative projects to build Pacific workforce capacity in the region and assisted in advising on quality service delivery to Pacific women. He has been the past President of the Pacific Medical Association and his work on motivating the Pacific workforce was recognised with an award of excellence service to Pacific people. Dr Ekeroma is a past Chairman of the NZ Branch of the Royal Australian & NZ College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and he has also held other senior professional roles in the College.
James (Jim) Green
Jim is the Chief Executive of Tairawhiti District Health Board. He has experience in health service delivery and management, including management of screening programme services. He has knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of screening programmes, and the interrelationship between screening and the community's needs.
Orana Harris
Tena koutou katoa. Ko Orana Harris toku ingoa. Orana Harris is a NZ registered nurse and has worked in a variety of areas. Orana is currently a Director of Nursing at a kaupapa Mäori Primary Health Organisation. She is married with two children and has two delightful mokopuna, ages four and two years. Orana’s interests are her mokos and golf. She is currently completing a Masters in Nursing at Victoria University of Wellington.
Barbara Holland
Barbara Holland has extensive experience as a consumer advocate. Barbara is currently the Co-convenor of the Federation of Women’s Health Councils and Coordinator of West Coast Well Women’s Centre. Barbara has previously worked as a Patient Advocate, Advocacy Services Canterbury/West Coast and Chaired the West Coast Regional Ethics Committee. Barbara has significant involvement with the existing cancer screening programmes.
Stephanie Erick Peleti
Stephanie Erick Peleti has a strong academic background, current involvement in research with Pacific families, and considerable experience in the health sector.
Caroline Shaw
Dr Caroline Shaw is a Public Health Medicine Specialist. She works as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago Wellington. Her main area of research is cancer epidemiology, in particular cancer inequalities. Caroline also teaches undergraduate medical students and is a Director of Training for the New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine.
Jim Vause
Dr Jim Vause is the principal doctor at Redwoodtown Doctors (1985-present). He is an independent medical advisor for the Health and Disability Commissioner (2002-present) and is an assessor for the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZGP) Cornerstone Practice Accreditation Program (2005-present).
